The tavern was busy that night. This was a town that was on the crossroads of two well-traveled roads, so there was never a night the place was empty. Besides a few better-off peasants from nearby farms and various locals from smiths to herbalists to leatherworkers, there were often adventurers. The tavern was a fairly clean one, the tables wiped after their customers left, the four serving girls in clean dresses. Some of the customers were laborers and city guards who didn't mind paying a little extra for ale in a clean mug delivered with a smile. There were also several mages nearby, students and the occasional instructor from the nearby academy.
It was traditional in this land, and most others known, for mages to wear robes. But here, the King's Law ordered mages wear certain colors, depending on their field. For example, fire mages would wear red, ice mages blue, etc. Beginner mages had a mostly white robe, with a stripe on each

Outside the crack, he could still see outside. The land outside was dry desert terrain, with scrub plants dotting the landscape and rocky hills and mountains in the distance. "(There's nothing out there.)" He was told.
"(It is better than just staring into the darkness.)" he answered, "(and how would you know?)"
(We are in Khazistan. I was stationed here once. There is nothing out here but dust, camels, and hostile nomads.)"

They were coming.
The invaders were not visible yet, still some distance away beyond the horizon. But he knew they would soon be here. The young soldier's eyes looked onto the field before him.
Ahead of him was the field, the grass brown from lack of water. There were a few shallow hills to the left. A cobblestone road led from the left passing that hill, then curved and went to the horizon, which was dotted with some leafless trees. There were few clouds in the bluish sky.
He heard someone shout, and he looked ahead. He could see dust clouds rising from where some of the trees were.
They were almost here!

"The Corsean Encounter" is almost finished. But, it needs editing. A friend agreed to help out, but is a little busy. And once that's done, need to figure out how to publish on Amazon. In the meantime, been writing a sequel, and a little on another tale, the prelude I just uploaded, "Sebastian the Healer."
For those who occasionally peek here, I am still writing on "The Corsean Encounter." The story is still less than halfway finished, but getting to a turning point.
